Frequently Asked Questions

Why fen photos?
[Sue] By some cruel oversight of fate I inherited the surname Jones, which doesn’t exactly help people search for me online or get a unique website address.
[Paul] And I've spent my life with people misspelling Beastall so this seemed like an easier option!

Which is better - film or digital photography?
It depends what you want.
The quality of digital for wildlife photos is second to none. Being able to take thousands of images to get just the right pose or moment is priceless. But nothing looks like authentic film grain for atmosphere. And old wet processes give a historical feel that no digital printer can match. So we are currently enjoying working with a combination of all the above for some unique art works.

Can this really be called art?
Yes. Photography is an art, else people wouldn’t hang it on their walls. Now stop rattling the pedant’s cage and back away slowly.

What about photographic manipulation?
It's great! Unfortunately it is often used to try to rescue poor photography, which is what gives it such a bad reputation. But mostly it is nothing new – dodging, burning, air brushing, photo sandwiches, superimposition – none of this is new, it is just easier now.

I want to give my money away – what should I do?
That depends. If you are saying that there is $100 million dollars waiting for us to send you a small fee – please email, everyone else seems to. If you want your money to do some good – try donating money through Sue's Just Giving site to Action for M.E. They gave much needed advice and support when she first became ill with the unpronounceable disease Myalgic Encephalopathy and she wouldn’t be out doing photography today if it wasn’t for their help.
